EXECUTIVE MEMBERS 2010-2011
President: John Kerby

Year: 4
Major: Criminology
Minor: History
Hey everyone! I'm John Kerby and this is my second go-around on Crim's Exec. This time around I'll be your president and will represent you all to the best of my abilities. I'm eagerly looking forward to the upcoming school year and working with a great team, a team which will be working hard all year to make this your best year, whether it's your first year in university or your graduating year. If there is one piece of wisdom that I have learned over my time here at uOttawa which I can impart on all of you, it would be to get involved with the university community. What that involvement entails depends on your own individual passions, but getting involved makes a huge difference in your university career.
So make the best of your time in University. I think my good friend Mark Twain put it best when he said “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

VP Communications Anglophone : Michelle Legault

Year: 2
Major: Criminology
Minor: Women's Studies
Hey! My name is Michelle Legault, and I'm a second year student here at the University of Ottawa, completing a Joint Honours Bachelor of Social Sciences Degree in Criminology and Women's Studies. I'm also one of the two VP Communications Officers this year for the Criminology Students Association. I love meeting people, and cannot wait to get to know more of my fellow students working through the CSA! This year, I am responsible for maintaining the Criminology Students Association website, updating the events calendar, and responding to any emails sent by criminology students to the CSA. Prior to the beginning of the school year and 101 week, I am also responsible for the mail out list, which lets all incoming criminology students know about the activities we will have planned for them when they arrive at the university, as well as how they can purchase 101 week kits.
So far, my I have had so many wonderful experiences at the University of Ottawa. My favourite class definitely has to be Introduction to Criminology with Professor Kempa. He is a very dynamic and energetic professor, so the lectures are never boring! My favourite moment as a student was during the Shinerama fundraiser during 101 week. It was during this event that I met some of my closest friends, as well as many of the wonderful people that I work with on the CSA! It was also very rewarding to be able to participate in something that helped me give back to my community.
My one piece of advice is this: get involved! Getting involved in clubs and activities is a great way to meet people. You will have fun and make great friends, making your overall experience at university all the more enjoyable!
Vp Communications Francophone: Pierre White

Year: 4
Specialization in Criminology
Minor: Psychology
Hey! My name is Pierre White and I’m one of two VP communications for the Criminology Students’ association for 2010-2011 academic year. I’m a very open person and I love meeting new people. It will be my pleasure to answer any questions or concerns you may have but most importantly I will keep you informed throughout the year of what we are doing for you. I’m currently in 4th year completing a Bachelors of Social Sciences with Specialization in Criminology with Minor in Psychology. As VP Communication I’m responsible to keep criminology students informed throughout the year about events organized by the CSA. I’m also responsible for the translations of documents and e-mails sent out by the CSA and the conceptions of posters to reach out the maximum amount of students possible. I also have the responsibility of updating the CSA web site and I’m responsible for the grade reps. So my task is mainly to keep criminology students informed as much as possible.
My favorite class to date at the University of Ottawa has to be Police and social control and Policing in modern society with professor Line Beauchesne. But in general all Criminology class are interesting. My best moment as a student was being a 101er and being a guide for 101 week. It’s a week full of activities where you have the chance to meet hundreds of people not only in criminology but also from all faculties.
GET INVOLED those are my words of advice to you. Believe me time will go by so much faster and it gives you the opportunity to meet new people fight for a cause you believe in and so much more. It also gives you unforgettable experiences that will fallow you for the rest of your life. University is a very good experience and gives you an opportunity that will give you helpful experience once you graduate.

VP External: Eric Leonard

Year:2
Major: Criminology
Hey everybody!
My name is Eric Leonard and I am the Criminology Student Association’s VP External for the 2010-2011 school year. I am a second year student in the Honours Bachelor of Social Sciences with specialization in Criminology program. I am a pretty easy going guy but also see the value and importance that hard work has, and plan to stand by that stance as part of the CSA.
My role as the VP External is mainly linking students in the Association with the outside world in terms of opportunities and resources available to them within the field of criminology. This includes being the liaison for the Infinity Lifers Group on campus (the only campus group linked directly to the CSA) and organizing events that can educate students in criminology about the field outside of the classroom. I plan to try and organize volunteer opportunities for students relating to the field, as we all know learning goes far beyond the classroom. In terms of events that I will be planning, look out for the Lifers group fundraiser (likely a bar night) that will be happening first semester. Other than that, planning is being done for fundraisers for other not for profit groups related to our field, so keep your eyes open for some fun events that will also raise money for useful causes.
My favourite moments as a student include the 2009 101 Week and also last year’s Capital Hoops Classic. The 2009-2010 CSA planned a great week of events that helped me meet other students in criminology and also get acquainted with our school. The Capital Hoops Classic was an awesome opportunity to show school pride and it was fun screaming at Carleton, even if they did win. In fact there is nothing more satisfying as a U of O student than being part of that rivalry. My favourite professor in university thus far was my Introduction to Criminology professor, Michael Kempa. Professor Kempa not only taught in a manner that made learning critical concepts of criminology easy, but he is a pretty down to earth guy who cares about his students, and that makes learning from him that much more fruitful.
If I could give one word of advice, it definitely would be to get involved. Your university experience is bound to be bland if the only thing you do is attend class and write papers. Getting involved can help you learn more about yourself as a student but also as a person, gives you the opportunity to meet new people, and also lets you work on causes you are passionate about. The University of Ottawa has over 175 clubs so there is no doubt you can find something that is the right fit for you.
